Mini Dental Implants
Mini dental implants are the latest advance in restorative dentistry, and they represent a very nice move forward from traditional full sized dental implants in two ways. The first is that they involve a less serious type of dental surgery, with less need for bone grafting and less severe consequences if the implant is rejected by the body’s immune system. The other benefit is price; the cost of dental implants is and has been a prohibitive factor that has led to many people who could have benefitted from the implants getting bridges instead in spite of the negative consequences of having a bridge versus having dental implants.
Cost Of Mini Dental Implants
The cost of mini dental implants is generally 60-70% lower than the cost of full sized dental implants. That puts mini dental implants much closer to the range that the average individual is able to afford. In fact, mini implants are so affordable that they are being used to help people who are unable to afford a full set of dental implants stabilize their dentures by hooking them into a series of mini dental implants along the jaw. They are also being used to support traditional crowns in certain circumstances, and are generally accepted as readily or more readily by the patient’s body.
With traditional implantations, the cost has ranged from $1000 at a very minimum (per tooth) all the way up to around $5000 per tooth. This range is explained by the various grades of material used, and the state of the patient’s previous dental health. For example, if bone grafting is required to stabilize the implant then the implant will end up costing much more. Also, the cost of implants is unpredictable because a dentist can rarely truly tell what will be involved until they have opened up the patient to perform the procedure.
Mini dental implants, by contrast, can cost as little as few hundred dollars, although more typically the cost will be comparable to the equivalent dental bridge–usually around $800 per tooth.
Advantages Of The Dental Implant Mini
The procedure to install a mini dental implant is much less traumatic for the patient and the recovery tends to be quicker. This is because there is much less damage to the bone; it is a tiny little piece of metal that is screwed directly into the jaw bone. The traditional implants required an intermediary which would first be implanted into the bone before the main rod could be screwed in. This is still the case with those types of appliances, but dental implant minis are different.
One of the greatest things about mini dental implants is that they are stable enough for immediate loading. With traditional dental implants, you end up being without teeth for a prolonged period of time. Most people are understandably reluctant to submit to this kind of discomfort. With mini dental implants you can walk out of the dentist’s office with an appliance solid enough to eat with right away. That is an amazing advance over previous dental implant technologies, which were themselves a major advance over tradition dentures and bridges.
